Every year we tend to get at least one pair of the pied wagtails. I haven't seen only one a few weeks ago.
I saw a lovely site yesterday. A yellow wagtail landed on a piece of floating bark on our pond and had a lovely wash. It's the first I've ever seen. Are they very rare?

Are you sure it was a Yellow Wagtail?. Its much more likely to be a Grey Wagtail at a Garden pond!.

Sadly the bird hasn't made another appearance so far. So I couldn't get a proper detail of it. So it might be like you said. I shall still look out for it though.
