World Trip Reports

Tatras

Just spent five days walking from Zakopane in Poland to Tatranska Lomnica in Slovakia (8th - 13th July). While the hiking was great, the birding was no more than OK - just a few interesting sightings:

- two wallcreepers in the Ciezka Dolina east of Rysy. Having walked down this valley I was informed that I wasn't allowed to be there at all! But it was worth it to see wallcreepers.

- All around the edge of the lake at the bottom of the Ciezka Dolina were black redstarts in the bushes. Lots of them. It seemed unusual that they were in the bushes rather than out in the open, unless perhaps they were common redstarts. But I never managed to see them very close up and since I wasn't supposed to be there, I didn't hang around.

- lots of nutcrackers all over.

- lots of ring ouzels. These were readily visible at dawn and dusk but I never saw one during the day - maybe they are crepuscular in this part of the World?

- quite a few pairs of bullfinches. These seem to inhabit pine forests in this part of Europe, which was a surprise.

- lots of crossbills.

- an eagle flying over the ridge near Swinica. I didn't see it for long, but I think it was a golden eagle. Apart from this there was a notable absence of raptors - just kestrels and buzzards.

- lots of chamois

So I wouldn't recommend the area that highly for birding, although perhaps Spring in the valleys would be better, or if you had a guide who could show you woodpeckers and owls.
