World Trip Reports

Sweden - Hornborgasjön

Hi. Me and my gf went to Hornborgasjön this monday and tuesday. Weather reports said that it would probably rain but we had luck with us and didnt need the umbrella even once. We saw alot of birds, both seabirds and raptors and we really enjoyed the stay! We alternated between 4 different observation points and thanks to other very kind birdwatchers (especially Magnus from Gothenburg) we also got alot of new IDs we wouldnt manage on our own. I really recommend Hornborgasjön and here are some of the birds we saw:

Crane!
Wood Sandpiper
Common Redshank
Black tern
Caspian Tern
Podiceps auritus (Dont know common name. It´s svarthakedopping in swedish)
Great Reed Warbler
Yellow Wagtail
Eurasian Hobby
Marsh harrier
Common Kestrel
Osprey
Sea Eagle
Common Buzzard

A white-winged tern was in the area but we didnt manage to find it. Yesterday it was reported once again.

and alot more :)

Hi Kristoffer,

Your svarthakedopping is our Slavonian Grebe. Sounds like you had a good day at Hornborgasjön. I've never been but would love to visit in spring when the really high numbers of cranes are present.

** And the svarthakedopping or Slavonian Grebe, Podiceps auritus, is Horned Grebe for us here in the Americas.
