I got a call on Saturday afternoon to say that there was a Red-backed Shrike on some waste ground in Dudley, only a couple of miles from my house. Was I going to twitch it? Two seconds later I was out of the door with my coat and my bins.
Twenty minutes later I was watching my first ever RBS ripping a mouse to pieces. I'm glad I got there when I did, as shortly afterwards it disappeared deep into the bushes with the mouse and proved impossible to relocate.
Obviously a full tummy encouraged it to spend the night, as it was spotted again yesterday morning. But by the evening it had disappeared. It appears that a Sparrowhawk had it for its tea!

Nature red in tooth and claw!
Does that mean if I see the Sparrowhawk I can tick the Shrike?
It's in there somewhere.
