Red Sea/Jan 2004

based at Taba (Egypt)very few birds seen here in this barren landscape and being close to the Israel border you are discouraged from leaving the hotel area.the hotel gardens provided sanctuary for a few interesting species notably Little Green Bea-eater,yellow vented bulbul, rock martin, blackstart, mourning and white crowned black wheatear additionally the beach had reef heron, desert wheatear and lesser sandplover In contrast a visit to Eilat across the border which has a greater variety of habitats proved more successful.obviously there are many more birds during migration.notable birds included Steppe and Bonellis eagles,spur-winged plover,Great black headed and white eyed gulls, pied kingfisher, graceful warbler,eastern/mountain chiffchaff, palestine sunbird, dead sea sparrow, indian silverbill, desert finch

Thanks for that Tony,

We may make it to Eilat one day.

GO!

Spent my honeymoon there - the birding is superb (even if armed scholl children on the beach can be a bit un-nerving!).

I can't wait to return.
