World Trip Reports

Red -necked Grebe @ Paxton PIts.

Although quite regular winter visitors to this part of the world, its not often (in my case never) you get to see them in summer plumage. This particular bird has been present at Paxton since the 6th May, and this afternoon I decided to try my luck to see it and if possible to get a pic of it.

Did not take to long to find the Grebe on the sailing lake as it was one of the few birds on the water and even better it was no more than 25-30 yards out from the edge giving great views through the bins. This would have been perfect to get a frame filling shot of the bird, unfortunately I was in the open and it was raining rather hard, so the Nikon had to stay in the rucksack (next time I will take an assistant with a brolly). Ignoring the rain, I continued to watch the bird for 15 mins as it swam slowly away from me. I don’t know whether it was due to the light conditions but the red neck had a lovely coppery sheen to it.

Continuing round the lake I got a second chance for really close views, but the rain kept on coming so the camera had to stay put until there was a short brake, when I managed to get a grab shot (see below) by which time the Grebe was a long way out.

Despite the weather the place was full of birdsong including a number of Nightingales (1st time I’ve heard them this year). Also saw my 1st Turtle Dove of the year.

Got back to the car somewhat wet, but happy.

hi paul
not a bad shot considering weather, but cheaper than a assistant
is a rain mac from jessops. for camera that is bert.

Nice shot in the circumstances Paul, and well worth the trip to see this lovely bird. I'm like you - the first sign of rain and I put the camera away. I would interested to hear if you manage to work out a system to keep it dry while filming.
