Population List for Stormville, New York



Hey all!

I've been checking the birds at our feeders and have been working on population figures for birds that have visited the feeders and also ones that were spotted at the pond.

Here's what I know:

Woodpeckers:
Hairy Woodpecker: 2 (One is a confirmed male)
Downy Woodpecker: 3 (Two are confirmed, one male, one female; the third is a little sketchy, since I saw another male woodie chasing the female)
Red-Bellied Woodpecker: 2 (Both confirmed, one male, one female)
Pileated Woodpecker: 1 (Only one bird confirmed, a female)

Sparrows:
Fox Sparrow: 1 (Somewhat confirmed, based on how close it was physically to what I saw)
American Tree Sparrow: 2 (Both confirmed, they are still here)
Song Sparrow: 1 (Confirmed)
Dark-Eyed Junco: 6 (Most confirmed, not sure of sexes)

Finches and Old World Sparrows:
House Sparrow: 1 (confirmed)
American Goldfinch: 12 (all confirmed, still picking out the sexes)
Pine Siskin: 2 (both confirmed, both adult females)
House Finch: 3 (All confirmed, 2 males, 1 female)
Purple Finch: 4 (all confirmed, 3 males, 1 female)

Chickadees, Titmice, Nuthatches:
Black-Capped Chickadee: 3 (all confirmed, not sure of sexes)
Tufted Titmouse: 2 (both confirmed, probably mates)
White-Breasted Nuthatch: 2 (both confirmed, probably Mates)

Thrushes and Robins:
American Robin: 1 (confirmed via number seen at once, but possibly different birds)

Wrens:
Carolina Wren: 2 (confirmed, probably mates)

Blackbirds (Icterids):
Brown-Headed Cowbird: 3 (all confirmed, 1 Male, 2 females)
Common Grackle: 9 (all confirmed)
Red-Winged Blackbird: 8 (all confirmed exc. lone female, 7 males)

Corvids:
Blue Jay: 3 (2 are confirmed)

Cardinals:
Northern Cardinal: 3 (all confirmed, 2 males, 1 female)

Flycatchers:
Eastern Phoebe: 1 (somewhat confirmed, based on description)

Doves:
Mourning Dove: 3 (all confirmed)

Mimids:
Northern Mockingbird: 2 (somewhat confirmed, based on description)

Herons:
Great Blue Heron: 2 (both confirmed, although we haven't seen them in a long while; a recent wading-bird footprint was discovered in snow in early March)

Ducks, Geese, and Swans:
Mallard: 4 (all confirmed, two pairs of mates)
Canada Goose: 2 (confirmed, Richardson's subsp., both mates)

Total birds noted: 92 birds
