World Trip Reports

Pipits again....

Hi all,
Decided to go to Tacumshin today, due to my having had poor views of the Water Pipit that was present there back at the start of the month(2 had been seen during the week).Unfortunately,we arrived quite late(after 2pm),so time was limited.Very shortly after arrival,I got a phone call from Killian Mullarney, who had relocated the Red-throated Pipit which was found on 1st Nov and not seen since....
This bird was very elusive, and a walk through the area where it had last been seen yielded nothing, but then an unmistakable call was heard:the Red-throated Pipit flying in!Unfortunately,it landed in long grass again, and the views that I got on the ground were poor enough(still, that call is so unmistakable!).
I did see one Water Pipit, but unfortunately this acted like they are said to do:on the way back to the car,Iain Hill and I flushed one at a reasonable distance(hadn't seen it on the deck),which then flew over and behind(WAY behind!)us before dropping to earth again.
Very happy to have had the RT Pip(an Irish tick),but still have never had good views of either species anywhere in the world(had seen a few fly-over RTP's in Bulgaria back in '99):another visit may be in order....

Nice one Harry. I've had 6 accepted RTP's and 4 of those were flyovers, one came down about 1/2 a mile away, but was a summ plum bird and the other I actually saw on the deck. Its a fabulous call isn't it!
