Photographic Life Lists

This topic has been discussed before but I thought I would share my experiences. I started a photographic life list of birds and other natural sightings in 2003 when I purchased my first digital camera. This has been a lot of fun and has helped me enjoy nature and be more observant on my nature walks. My bird list at the end of 2010 stood at 402 different species of birds.

I did two things this year that upped my enjoyment. The first was to re-organize my image collection by devising a numbering system that automatically sorts the images into proper taxonomic order. It was becoming very tedious, manually sorting on the English name. The second was to assemble the images into a book. I have my images on my hard drive and share them on my smugmug site, however I like the feel of a book hence the decision to create a book showing my photographic list to the end of 2010. I plan on doing this annually. The 2011 version will show the list as of the end of 2011, highlighting the adds and upgrades done over the year. This will in effect become a written record of my annual progress.

I have made the book public, not in an attempt to sell it but to show you the end result in case some of you are interested in assembling your own photographic record.

The link to the 2011 updates to my on line gallery, which will become the basis for the 2011 book, is at this link.
