Driving from Costa Rica we crossed the border at Paso Canoas and started three weeks birding Panama with my british buddy Robert Dean, my wife and my 1 year old son Nicolas. We birded many interesting areas on our way to the Canal area including El Cope,Las Macanas,El Valle(!). Later we focused on the Canal birding areas both Caribbean and Pacific and later we made a short visit to the Cerro Azul area. On the way back to C.Rica we stopped again at el Valle and finally stayed for a few days in the Chiriqui highlands, mainly Volcan (much better than Boquete).
The total of species seen was 412 plus a few only heard. The best stuff we had was:
Rufous-crested Coquette, Tody Motmot and Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch at El Valle.
Wing-banded Antbird at Pipeline Road
Costarican Pygmy-Owl at Volcan (Boquete Trail)
Rosy Thrush-Tanager at Parque Metropolitano
Cinereous Becard at Madden Lake
Violaceus Quail-Dove, Common Potoo, Great Potoo at Fort Sherman.
Spot-crowned Barbet at Achiote Road
