Oaxaca , Mexico trip report Feb. 5th-9th



Here's my trip report from Mexico this past month.The trip was all within the state of Oaxaca, Mexico in a 5 day period . The bird guide was local Oaxacan by the name of Roque Antonio Santiago and he was FANTASTIC ! We covered both Eastern and Western slopes with several different flora habitats. Over 200 species seen and over 130 lifers.9 Hummingbirds and several endemics.Great food and wonderful scenery .
Highlights included : SUMICHRAST'S WREN, RED-CAPPED MANAKIN,RED WARBLER, LESSER ROADRUNNER,OAXACA SPARROW,CANIVET'S HUMMINGBIRD,BLACK-CRESTED COQUETTE,DUSKY HUMMINGBIRD, MEXICAN WHIPOORWILL , CINNAMON-BELLIED FLOWERPERCER ,LONG-BILLED GNATWREN,APLOMADO FALCON .Best song was the Slate-colored Solitare.

Stephen,
Just noticed your trip report - looks like a great trip. Oaxaca is definitely one of the best birding areas in Mexico.


Steve,
You forgot to tell about the road we took through the 10,000 ft. cloud forest that was washed away in three places, the unidentified meals eaten in local places, the pre-historic fish we ate, the White-tailed Kite (you gotta add the pix, since I don't know how), and about 50 other exciting places and events that occured during the 5 day trip.
I can't imagine a more rewarding birding trip (well, perhaps in S. America).
