World Trip Reports

NW Ecuador, March 2007

Hi birdforum!

I just recently returned from 2 1/2 weeks in Ecuador. It was a fantastic trip, and my first to the neotropics. My dad and I did 4 days of birding with Scott Olmstead (Tropical Birding Guide) NW of Quito. We had 259 species in just four days. Wow! Almost all were life birds. After those few days, we joined a group from my school in Quito to build a church among other things. We also did some touring around and added more birds to my list!

In the first 4 days, we birded Yanacocha, the Old Nono-Mindo Rd, Upper Tandayapa Valley, Rio Silanche (PVM), Milpe, Tandayapa Bird Lodge, and a few places in between. Later in the trip, we birded around San Pedro (a barrio SW of Quito) and went to Mitad del Mundo and the Papallacta Pass area.

I haven't had time to write up a report, but hopefully I'll be able to soon. I have however been spending tons of time going through my photos. I've been uploading regularly to my website, and started loading them into birdforum for the database today. It will take me a while!

You can see my photos as I upload them here:

I've uploaded about 50 but have at least 100 more to go!

I haven't been around birdforum much for a long time! Life is way to busy. Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know in case you want to cruise through the photos.

If anyone has specific questions, I'll be glad to help you out. Hopefully I'll get around to posting a complete trip list and details. We did have 38 hummingbirds, 42 flycatchers, and best of all 53 tanagers. What a country!

Adios,
Michael

Hello Michael,
Glad to see you back on the forum. It's been a while .
I'm really looking forward to your trip report - looking for ideas for a future trip. You certainly had a good guide, I met Scott in Cape May last year and he said that he was going to Ecuador to guide.

Some great photos there, Michael. I'm off to NW Ecuador next month, so I'm interested in all reports from the area.

Cheers
VB
