World Trip Reports

Northern Senegal & Gambia

Hi everyone,

I just uploaded to my website (www.iyufera.com) a report and photos from a trip I took in October to The Gambia & Northern Senegal; I think the Senegal part is especially interesting since it's a relatively underexplored area, from a birding point of view.

Even though the grass was still high and made ground observation difficult, I managed to find most of the best species of the area around St Louis (near the Mauritanian border), which is mainly sahel acacia woodland and scrub, with seasonal wetlands and some semidesert.

Some of the highlights were Savile's Bustard, Temminck's Courser, Spotted Thick-knee, Chestnut-backed (see photo) and Black-headed Sparrowlarks, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater... and African Spurred Tortoise.

Best regards from Madrid,

Ignacio Yúfera
