World Trip Reports

My rarest sighting...

I saw the most unusual woodpecker. It was black with black and white stripes on the face and neck, red crown, and a white belly. The eyes looked white. I was thinking it was a sort of melanistic pileated, but I am not sure, it did seem to have a crest. The beak was yellow. I never seen one like that here. The thing was bigger than my dogs (approximately 10-12 inches long from beak to tail). I didn't have my camera rolling at the time or I'd have got a snapshot of it. Any clue as to what this was??

It sounds realy wierd. I cant help you on this one. But hopefully someone else can.
Good luck.

Acorn Woodpecker? - just off the top of my head! - I think they have pale eyes...

Andy.
