Making my first list

I have decided to make my first list of species seen using a excel spreadsheet.
The problem is i can remember what i've seen in my head but can you still claim it if u dont remember what date you have seen it.
I'm not sure the best way to make a list thats gonna work for me i aint that good at using excel either lol..

Starting a "life list" is a good way to review what you have seen and sort of keep track of your sightings. About 2&1/2 years ago, I took all my old scraps of paper notes with sightings I had marked down, and also all the notes scribbled in the pages of my various field guides and made a consolidated list. All the birds that I had records of went on the list. Then I added a few others that I could vividly remember (on those, the date I entered was an approximation and in the notes column I entered "date approximate".

If most of your birding is in the UK and you have the "Access" program on your computer, then there is an excellent listing program you can download for free (made by a BF member). Here is the web address: (http://brandonbirding.co.uk/news/default.asp) to find a link to it. You will see on the right hand side Jeff's birding database.
