World Trip Reports

Majorca October 2006 - Wot no gulls!

Not really a report but a query.

Went on a non-birding break to SaComa/Calla Millor area of the island a few weeks ago. But took bins each day when we walked along the sea front so must have been out more than 3 hours each day.

Having lived on the coast, holidayed at sea side, lived overlooking farmland and just sat in the garden I expect to see Gulls. But over 7 days I noted only 14 and only once saw more than a lone gull and even then two of these were probably the same juvenile!

Obviously they will not be on the beaches which were in constant use for burning the flesh but I saw no sign of birds crossing the bays or on the small [said to be] bird reserve between Sa Coma and Cala Millor.

Is this usual for that part of the coast and for that year or typical?

Did you check what type of Gulls they were, we visited Cala Bona end of Sept/Oct .. (next one along from Cala Millor) and near the harbour there was always gulls including Audouin's Gulls. (One of the rarest in the World). Most of these were not ringed but some were. We managed to read the ring numbers they had on and made enquiries through Estebannic (Birdforum member who lives in Majorca) and found out that 3 of them were 3 year olds that had been ringed in the south of the island and another was 11 and had came from near Ibiza. (the partying must be too much for him).

The area between Sa Coma & Cala Millor (Punta...forgot its name) is normally very good for birds but we found it a bit quieter and they seemed to be hiding more. I was told that it had been very hot in the area for quite a few months so this might have had something to do with it.
