Lewis's Woodpecker in NE Mexico.

A month ago we (The NE Mexico birding Club) got a email concerning a Lewis's Woodpecker spotted in Chipinque park. Chipinque Park is part of the Sierra Madre Oriental on the East Coast of Mexico. As many of you all know, the Lewis's Woodpecker is a common species in the West of North America, and it only visits Mexico during the winter, it stays in the state of California Norte. It was first seen by John Caye, and afterwords we went lookinf for it and ther it was. We do not know when it first arrived to the park, but after it was spotted it stayed for a couple of weeks. The forest fires that we have had in the past years have helped make it a little like his open forest dry pine habitat. We were all very excited and hope to see it next year with a mate, you never know. I'm attaching a picture Antonio Hidalgo took of the bird while being at the park.

Hi adrianganemsada, can we call you Adrian?

Welcome to Birdforum, from all the Staff here!

Don't know much about your part of the World but it sounds like an exciting event, having a smart bird like that turn up out of range! Keep looking, you never know.....

Call round to the 'Say Hello' Forum and tell us a bit about yourself, if you'd like to, let a few of the other Members know you're around.

Cheers,

Andy.

Hola, Adrian! Another warm welcome to you from BirdForum!

Congratulations on such a great bird showing up! I wonder if it's one of the pair that returns to our high alpine home every summer in northeast Arizona to raise another family? Wish I could band them, see where they show up during the winter.

Looking forward to hearing more about the birds in your part of Mexico!
