Kenya Trip (Feb 11 - 26, 2004)

I had a great trip to Kenya, East Africa recently. I went with a Elterhostel sponsered group. There were 18 participants in our party, all from various locations in the United States (from Washington D.C. to Seattle, Washington).
Attached is the list of birds I recorded on that trip to Kenya. I also picked up 27 new birds in London with the kind assistance of Grousemore.

Larry,
Wow! What a list. I'd be curious to hear a little more about the trip. Was it a group birding trip or did you just bird during your visit? Was your guide a birder?
Thanks,

We traveled in three vans, six birders to each, with a "guide" in two of the vans. The one "guide" was a "birder" or sorts, but I caught him with several misidentifications. The other guide knew a little about birds, but his knowledge was minimal. The "odd van out" had no "guide". The guide situation was a little disconcerting to say the least. However, the main "guide" did point out various cisticolas identifying them by their calls (otherwise I would not have had a clue). But whenever he saw a LBJ (little brown job) and called it a Willow Warbler, my confidence in his identifications waned a little more. I was able to ID most of the birds we saw as I had done quite a bit of study of the Kenya field guide before we took the trip. The second "apprentice guide" enjoyed even less credibility when he called a Pale Chanting Goshawk a Bateluer. All in all it was an enjoyable trip.
