My first time ever in California. Went to Yosmite, then up to Reno, NV for a few days, and finally back to wine country and SanFran. Saw two Great Horned Owls near the coast, which was probably my most exciting spot. Besides that, saw a bunch of the usual suspects (new to my life list):
Stellar's Jay
Mountain Chickadee
White-Throated Swift
Blue Grouse
Oak Titmouse
Acorn Woodpecker
White-Headed Woodpecker
Black Phoebe
Red-Breasted Nuthatch
White-Crowned Sparrow
Wilson's Warbler
Great Horned Owl
Anna's Hummingbird
Loggerhead Shrike
Yellow-Headed Blackbird
California Gull
Wilson's Phalarope
California Quail
Western Scrub Jay
Prarie Falcon (I think)
Sage Thrasher (I think)
Plus a few more. Pictures up sometime this or next week! ![]()
Hope you enjoyed good cabernet while bird watching.
Blue Grouse (now split into two species - the Sooty Grouse is the one in California) is great for a quick trip into California! I'd been birding here (though mostly not in the Sierras) for 20 years before I made a special trip to the Glacier Point parking lot in Yosemite to see it.
