World Trip Reports

Jotunheim, Norway August 2007

Have just been for a guided hike with Den Norske Turistforening in the Jotunheim in Norway. It was a hiking trip rather than a wildlife trip but here's what I saw:

16th August - Juvassytta to Spiterstulen via Galdhopiggen. For most of the day it was raining hard. The only respite was when we were at the top of Galdhoppigen where it was snowing instead. I saw three wild animals during the day, but two of them were lying dead on the glacier (a mouse and a reindeer). The other was a rather cold looking snow bunting at the top of Galdhopiggen. It probably wasn't far from expiring itself.

17th August - Spiterstulen to Glitterheim. Lots of live reindeer today, and a few birds such as wheatear, a common gull and a redshank. Also a pair of waders flying near the river at Spiterstulen first thing. I think they might have been wood sandpipers from the brownish colour and lack of wingbars.

18th August - Glitterheim to Memurubu. Today was a lot better. Decent views of a rough-legged buzzard to start the day, probably the sighting of the trip. Then a pair of golden plover. Also quite a few birds in the bushes near to Russvatn (a bunting (female reed?) and a bluethroat disappearing into the bushes, identified by the distinctive red on the tail). Then a family group of willow grouse close to the path. At Memurubu a family group of what I think were willow warblers - pale northern variety. Also quite a few redpoll.

19th August - Memurubu to Gjendesheim via Besseggen. Today was the best day. For several hours it stopped raining entirely. Lots of ring ouzel along the Besseggen ridge. Also a large raptor flying north across the ridge (golden eagle?) and two falcons near Bessvatn at about 1200m. I really wanted these to be gyrfalcons, and thought initially that they were, since they were some 200m above the treeline, but the strongly barred underparts and barred tails seemed to suggest goshawk instead. They were very acrobatic, engaging in some mock fighting between each other, and at one point chasing a small passerine.

Any comments on my IDs would be welcome.
