I was going to delete that and start again..but may as well leave it there now.
For these days of excellent information, I have a relatively modest British list of just 370. In order to make myself feel good about this, I just spent an hour doing a little analysis. Iwas interested in how many birds I had twitched, as in jumped in a car an driven serious distance, as opposed to seeing locally, or by twiching pr-emptively....picking the location on the weather and time of year and seein if th birds come to me. The latter is one of my favourite hobbies!
Anyway I have seen 185 exactly 50% in my garden. These include Sooty Searwater , Balearic Shearwater, Storm Petrel, Velvet Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Marsh Harrier, White-rumped Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, 4 species of Skua, Sabine's, Ring-billed and Mediterranean Gull, Roseate Tern, White-winged Tern, Hoopoe, Wryneck, Richards Pipit, Black Redstart, Yellow-browed Warbler, Wood Warbler and Snow Bunting.
I've seen a further 59 species on my local patch 1.5km away, inc White Stork, Corncrake, Spotted Crake, Kentish plover, Dotterel, Wood Sandpiper, Bee-eater, Woodlark, Shorelark, Red-rumped Swallow, Tawny Pipit, Bluethroat, Savi's, Aquatic, Great Reed, Icterine, Melodious, Dartford and Barred Warblers, Great Grey Shrike, Woodchat Shrike, Chough, Hooded Crow, Serin, Hawfinch, and Lapland and Cirl Bunting
14 more within a 4km square that includes my house Alpine Swift , over my current house before I moved in, Pallas' Warbler in my previous garden, Quail, Subalpine Warbler, Desert Warbler and White-crowned Sparrow being the most interesting. 18 more on the Wirral including Montagus Harrier, American Wigeon, Bonapartes Gull, Marsh Warbler, Long-billed Dowitcher, Waxwing, Little Bunting, Little Crake, Ruddy Shelduck, Avocet, Temminck's Stint, Wilson's Phalarope, Bearded Tit and Great White Egret.
So that's 276 (75%) very close to home. Spreading the net to the whole county I can add a few more Collared Pratincole, Night Heron, Gohawk, Baird's, Buff-breasted and Upland Sandpiper, Lesser yellowlegs, Dipper and Dark-eyed Junco, making it 288 in my home county. 318 (86%) in the NW of Britain, with things like Black Duck, Lesser Scaup, Cattle Egret, Black-winged Praticole, Greater Sandplover, Pacific Golden Plover, Kildeer, Greater Yellowlegs, Franklin's Gull, Ross's Gull, Trek Sand, Black Lark, Song Sparrow, Spanish Sparrow, Southern Grey Shrike, Nutcracker, Marsh Sand, Desert Wheater, Forsters and Bridled Tern, River Warbler, Sardinian Warbler and Red-necked Phalarope
Of the rest, I have found, or been in the right place, therefore not had to travel to see White-billed Diver, King Eider, Great Snipe, Semi-palmated Sandpiper, Laughing Gull, Pallas’s Sandgrouse (how is that for spawny!), Olive-backed Pipit, Citrine Wagtail, Eyebrowed Thrush, Booted Warbler, Arctic Warbler, Dusky Warbler, Penduline Tit, Woodchat Shrike, Rustic Bunting, Black-headed Bunting
So I have long-distance twitched, 19, or about 5% of the species. Pied-billed Grebe, Green Heron, Ring-necked Duck (how embarassing) , Oriental Pratincole, Sociable Lapwing, Spotted Sandpiper, Lesser Crested Tern, Little Swift, Belted Kingfisher, Red-flanked Bluetail, Pied Wheatear, Siberian Thrush, Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Spectacled Warbler, Radde’s Warbler, Isabelline Shrike, Lesser Grey Shrike, Blackpoll Warbler, Savannah Sparrow!
Wow Jane that is some impressive list, my side of the county is pretty deserted compared to yours. Obviously I don't see any of the sea birds except the odd gull scavenging around the local tip.
