World Trip Reports

Iceland

I am just back from a three week trip around Iceland. It was an organized tour and birding was not the main goal of the tour, but the birding spots of Iceland such as Arnastapi, Latrabjarg and Lake Myvatn were on the program.

Latrabjarg
Kittiwakes, a lot of gulls, northern fulmars, razorbills. There were also atlantic puffins, but not as much as in earlier years.

Myvatn
Golden plovers, horned grebes and a lot of ducks.

Nearly everywhere near shorelines.
Arctic terns which were fortunately more busy in feeding than attacking tourists, skuas, oystercatchers, ringed plovers and redshanks signalling intruders to all other birds.

There was also a smaller lake in the west fjords with over 30 red-necked phalaropes.

Photos about the birds (from this and other trips to Iceland) can be found under http://www.pbase.com/tcom/birds

For those wanting to see Iceland without getting wet feets, I have put the photos of this trip under http://www.pbase.com/tcom/ice2005

Excellent photos & a great website, thanks for sharing. I particularly liked the pictures of Jokulsarlon. The clean Icelandic air brings out the best photographic colours & you were so fortunate to have all that blue sky.

Glad you had a good time in Iceland, Dominique, and you certainly got around the country pretty well, you seemed to have gone almost eveywhere! You have taken some terrific shots. The glacial lagoon at Jökulsárlón is one of the greatest sights you can see anywhere, it amazes me everytime I go, as does the huge waterfall Dettifoss. You've even been to places I've never visited in my ten years here in Iceland, such as Landmannalaugar. One thing, you have a photo labelled "Ivory Gull" nest. I think these are Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) eggs. Ivory Gull (Pagophila eburnea) does not breed in Iceland but I don't actually know what their eggs look like. If it was an Ivory Gull's nest, please send me the details!!!
