Hummers !!

Tony C's recent post about a Costa Rican Hummingbird sighting got me checking my list. I've recorded 59 species of hummingbirds in my travels.

Best two sights I've found for these great birds are: La Paz Waterfalls in Costa Rica(great feeders and a butterfly farm to amaze) and the feeders(dozens) on the porch of the Tandayapa Bird Lodge in Ecuador. At the later you will see hundreds of hummers and dozens of species within an hour or two! Oh yeah...at a distance of less than 3 meters with some parting your hair.

How about you? What have you got on your list?

I've just got 25 hummers to date. Best location was at the "Hummingbird Gallery" at the reserve entrance in Monte Verde, Costa Rica. Litterally hundreds flying around about 6 one-gallon feeders (that were filled twice a day!). Actually felt uncomfortable with them zipping around right in my face!

I've still got some photos from that trip that I need to get out and ID. That will probably add about 5 more to my list.

We also have lots in Mexico, but spread out all over the country. We went to Catemaco, Veracruz last year and went birding with William Schaldach's grandson. Saw lots of hummers there also, but feeding on native plants rather than at feeders.

Attached is one of my favorites from Colombia, a Sparkling Violet-Eared Hummingbird feeding on a Fuschia in my garden in Bogota.

That does it. I'm going to Costa Rica. You are two very lucky guys and I am drooling here.
