Hello everybody!
Few days ago a large flock of great grey shrikes has been observed in Poland. Approximately 110 individuals. This observation provoked a discussion: is it probable (possible) or not? What do you think about it in relation to your own experiences, observations and knowledge? The birds have been observed by experienced birdwatcher.
I find it surprising. Shrikes tend to be loners.
Live up here in Lithuania, next door to Poland - Great Grey Shrikes are common on my local patch and increasing in number - now got about 6 or 8 pairs per year with up to 5 or so also wintering.
So, I see Great grey Shrikes virtually daily ...but I would fall over backwards in surprise if I ever saw a flock of over 100! Biggest number I ever get is in late summer, when occasionally families of one or two families seem to merge, creating very loose flocks of up to 15 to 20 (but really are loose flocks, more a dense scatter of pairs and individuals in a very small area).
All I can say, if it was a flock of 110, I would not fancy being a juicy beetle or small bird in that area!!!
