Grey Russia

Just returned from a week in Moscow and St Petersberg. In fairness this was not a birding hol but I took the binos wherever I went hoping to see somethign different but have to say there was a dirth of birds and all I did see, I have seen in Britain. In the cities the main birds were hooded crows, feral pigeons, house sparrows, swifts and whitefaced wagtails. On the rivers were gulls: little, herring and black headed plus some common terns. The countryside around St P offered a skylark, whitethroats and lesser whitethroats, starlings and fieldfare. Tufted and Mallard ducks on ponds and single sightings of a chaffinch, blue and great tit, rook, house martin and swallow.
Prior to the hol I had been concerned that there is not a good fieldguide for this area of Russia but on this showing all you need is Collins British Birds.
