Green peafowl finally spotted in Northeast India

I has recently returned from a bird trip to NE India (Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur).

I have visited NE at more than 9 times now, mostly to go birdwatching, I have seen most rare species in the region by now, but a one species have I never been able to see, the Green peafowl, nearly extinct in India by now.

In 4 October I finally manage to spot a single male of this species in a deep forest valley in southeast Manipur, I did become very happy as it is the first time I have seen it on the Asian mainland and I have spend several days, yes even weeks in try to locate the bird and I finally did

Had only seen it on Java before this record.

Well done, sebbe!

Hi Sebbe,
That is great news. The Green Peafowl is considered by some orinthologists to be extinct in India, though I differ.
I did see a pair at Mizoram Zoo last winter. The authorities mentioned that the birds were collected in India near the Mayanmar border.
Is there any way that a trip list can be shared? I keenly follow birding news from around north-east India and whould love to know more.
If necessary, you can pm me or send an email to sumitsen@rediffmail.com.

Cheers!
Sumit
