Extremadura (Tajo Internacional and Sierra de San Pedro) (April 18-24, 2011)

Hi:

Last Easter we stayed 4 days in Caceres province, visiting the Tajo Internacional Natural Park and Sierra de San Pedro. Despite the constant rain, we managed to see some interesting species, as black vulture and black stork, although we missed the imperial eagle. In my blog you can see a new post (http://arodris.blogspot.com/) with some pictures, maps of the areas that we visited and the complete list of species seen.

In summary:

Most of the observations were done around the rural house were we stayed. This house is located in El Jiniebro, and belongs to the small village of Aceña de la Borrega, that, in turn, belongs to the city of Valencia de Alcántara. All this area is included in the natural park. Corn buntings, common stonechats, red-rumped swallows, and several warblers were really abundant.

In the north part of the park, in addition to visit several viewpoints to the river, we did a trip in ship through the river, departing from Herrera de Alcántara. In the Duero, last year, it was really interesting, but here it was a little bit dissapointing. However, in the viewpoints we were able to see lots of raptors. In addition to elks and an egyptian moongoose, we observed black stork, egyptian vulture and abundant eurasian griffons.

One of the days, we also did a route by car through the Sierra de San Pedro. Area with dehesas, where vultures were abundant, including black vulture. But also deers and booted eagle.

Finally, one of the day we visited the city of Cáceres, really beautiful, and the Los Barruecos Natural Monument. Despite the rain, we were able to see some species. Very high numbers of white storks.

Antonio
