We spent a week in Dubrovnik in mid-August 2011. It was real hot every day (30C+) so birdlife was quiet. Dubrovnik itself was full of Alpine Swifts in the evening. Only one Pallid Swift was seen. I did some birding in the scrubby area near our apartment (in Montovjerne) where Eastern Orphean, Subalpine and Sardinian Warblers were present. A good place to see birds is at the top of Mt Srd, accessible by cable car. On a late afternoon excursion I saw Eastern Olivaceous Warbler, Black-eared Wheatear and Red-backed Shrike on a short walk. It’d be worth spending more time up here, the habitat looks really good. Sure to be Rock Partridges here as well.
I especially wanted to see Pygmy Cormorants, so got driven by our friendly apartment owner Miro to the Neretva Delta, an hour and a half north. Great scenery, and I saw a dolphin on the way (!) Just north of Blace in the Delta Pygmy Cormorants are easily seen in the estuary. The Delta is also a good place to look for dragonflies, including Bladetails. Dubrovnik is a great place to have a holiday, swimming is great in the warm clear water, and the weather is fabulous. Families with small kids might have a tough time though, there are loads of steps and hills in Dubrovnik. I saw 31 species, plus some interesting dragonflies and butterflies (Two-tailed Pasha), not too bad for the time of year.
You've put me to shame. I was there in early July and due to spending all my time on the beach or in bars only saw lots of Alpine Swifts (which were spectacular)!
Yes I had a fair bit of pivo* as well!
