This dark grey and black Downy Woodpecker has been hanging aound the suet blocks for a week now. It seems to be a little smaller than the normal colored Downy. The Sibleys Guide says that there are dark Hairys in Labrador, but this is a Downy and some 700 miles from there easy. These pictures are not great but its as close as we can get. I've include a normal male Downy taken at the same time for reference. Has anyone ever seen a Downy or Hairy in the East with this much melanism before?
