Crowned Crane in Mallorca - October 2006

In a recent family holiday to Mallorca at the end of October, I was very surprised to come across a Crowned Crane in the Waterworks (Depuradora) area of the Albufera.

It was present for both visits I made here. First seen briefly in flight over the reed beds, and on the second visit it was on the waterworks pools.

I took some distant pics, one of which is on my trip report - see http://www.stephenburch.com/trips/m.../mallorca06.htm

I also took some flight shots, and there was no sign of a ring, certainly on the left leg, but it was difficult to be sure as the pic quality was poor! Also it seemed quite wary, and didnt allow a close approach at all.

Does anyone know the origin of this bird?

Origin: Either an escape or an accidental African vagrant.
What a beautiful bird!
