Pretty respectable! How much work goes into nailing particularly the forest species?

John

well some of the species are stupidly easy (things like rusa or wild pigs which hang around National Park headquarters like dogs). In the forest the primates and squirrels are generally pretty easy just because they're diurnal and usually quite active, but even the monkeys can be hard sometimes where they're hunted (they vanish as soon as they see a person about). The other species are sort of luck -- you go out at night and see what you see. It does make for a tiring trip because you're out all day looking for birds and monkeys and then up half the night as well looking for civets or tarsiers, but its all good fun; if you don't put in the hours you don't get the results. There were lots of species I missed that I was sure I would have seen, like in Sulawesi where I only saw two of the macaques (black crested and Heck's) and completely failed to find any of the other five species even though most should have been relatively easy (that failure was really due to time constraints which only gave me a couple of days at each site). Of course there were also lots of species I saw that had to remain unidentified (hence the very few bats and rats in the list!)
