On April 14th 2006, my wife and I set forth for a 7 day break in Cala Bona, Majorca. It was the fist time that we had visited this part of the island. Armed with Ian F's excellent map and bird list, I explored the area and had an enjoyable time listening to, watching and occasionally identifying some birds. It seems that the majority of warblers choose the densest and most inaccessible of places from which to sing. The highlight was a hoopoe which I managed to get quite close to and photograph. I have attached a picture. There were so many that I failed to identify that I will have to revisit in the future, in the hope that I can extend my list.
My list consist of :
Audouin's Gull, Yellow legged Gull, Shag, Cormorant,
House sparrow, Blackbird, Blackcap
House Martin, Swallow, Swift
Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Serin, Yellow Hammer, Linnet
Collared Dove, Feral Pigeon, Wood pigeon
Stonechat, Sardinian Warbler,
Woodlark
Hoopoe
Buzzard (presumably long legged)
Kestrel
Hi Al,
Im glad to hear the info was of use and that you got so many good species. We'll no doubt be back there later in the year ourselves.
HI Al,
Welcome to Birdforum.
Yes Cala Bona is a lovley place and the birding walks are quite close by. You did well on your list with the species and a good picture of the Hoopoe as well as they are so skittish. It always makes my day to see the Audoins on the beach near the Hotel Alicia at about 5pm....there is normally a group of about 5 that meet up and follow each other around, considering they are supposed to be the rarest gull in the World, Cala Bona tops it for seeing them.
