Dear All
I visited Cairo in Egypt recently on business (17th-24th and 30th October 2008), staying at the JW Marriott Hotel which is not far from the International Airport in the NE part of the city. In the morning and evenings I wandered around the hotel looking for birds. The grounds of the hotel includes a smart golf course complete with lakes and planted borders.
I found the following species: Blackbird; Chiffchaff; Collared Dove; Common Bulbul; Common Redstart; Feral Pigeon; Graceful Prinia (Graceful Warbler); Great Grey Shrike; Hooded Crow; Hoopoe; House Sparrow; Kestrel; Laughing Dove; Lesser Whitethroat; Little Egret; Meadow Pipit; Moorhen; Mosque Swallow (the local red-bellied barn swallow); Night Heron; Pied Kingfisher; Spotted Flycatcher; Spur Winged Plover; Squacco Heron; Stonechat; White Wagtail; White-breasted Kingfisher and Willow Warbler.
Particularly common around the hotel were the white wagtails and common bulbuls. I also briefly saw a high-flying raptor but was unable to determine the species and a swift that could have been either common or pallid. Additionally, I managed to visit the pyramids at Saqarra on one day where I was able to add Crested Lark to my list.
I hope you find this useful.
