Brown Pelican

Well everybody probably knows that brown Pelicans aren't exposed to come to BC Canada. Well today I went to Clover Point in Victoria and saw one. There has been several sightings of these around here and in the local newspaper they said there was one there earlier in the week. I saw them in California but this is the first one since I really got into birding and one into my BC and Canadian bird list.

According to the "Guide to the birds of Costa Rice", the range of Brown Pelican is: "Paific coast from Washington to N Peru, Atlantic: Gulf and Caribbean coasts and islands from North Carolina to E Venezuela"
Victoria is not too far from the Washinton state, so I donīt think that this is unusual.
Cheers,
Wes

Two sources other than Sibley's show this species to be very rare north of Southern California (Audubon and Cornell's Lab of Ornithology). I say "other than Sibley's" because I don't have my field guide at hand.

I'd say this is a good find, Canadagurl, and you should probably report your sighting to the local bird records authority (sorry, don't know what that would be in Canada).
