Can anyone tell me where there are still any bitterns, and whether there are still any in Cambridgeshire?
In the 70s there used to be some near Mepal in Cambridgeshire. I used to camp on occasional weekends at the Mepal sailing Centre, and camped round the edge of the former gravel pit. At dawn we used to hear them booming although I never saw any. At that time the small clubhouse was at the Chatteris end of the lake. Now there is a massive building at the other end...where there used to be alot of reeds.
Does anyone know if they are still there? Or when they were last there?
As they are an endangered species in the UK at least, I don't think it wise for people to answer this question on a public Forum.
