Birds in Cap Salou

Just returned from a family holiday to Cap Salou with three young children [and my wife!] - great holiday but little birding done.

I won't talk about the occasional trip into the mountains or the Ebro Delta [but go if you can, its a great spot - just don't try feeding your 10 month old with banana whilst trying to tell whether the "huge" tern you are looking at is a Caspian or just wishful thinking!] and my overall trip list was only 67.

However, over 30 of these were seen from our balcony window which was at the rear of the H10 Mediterranean Village Hotel in Cap Salou. Behind this hotel are a few pine trees and an area of heathland that seems to have avoided all the intrusion and disturbance that the rest of the local area suffers.

My balcony list included hoopoe [regular], bee-eater [2-3 often], Iberian race green woodpecker, short toed treecreeper, melodious warbler, crested tit, tawny owl, spotted flycatcher, spotless starling, tree sparrow and sardinian warbler. In addition I also saw nightjars on a few occasions - they looked quite long tailed and more reddish than dark brown but I don't feel I can claim red necked.

Anyone else noticed this area in what is largely a bird free town? It looks like it is being protected from development as it is totally fenced off.
