World Trip Reports

Bangalore Business

I had to go to Bangalore, India, for a business trip last week. I only managed to squeeze in a tiny bit of birding because work didn't leave me much day light. My hotel was near Cubbon Park, an area of open, dry parkland. I grabbed 90 mins the evening I arrived and another hour at first light the day before I left.

I was a bit nervous setting off to the middle of a park in a strange city but soon relaxed. It wasn't as intimidating as I'd imagined.

Species seen (in order of appearance)

Black Kite - unmissable.
House Crow - common.
Ring-neck Parakeet - common
House Swift - around tops of tower blocks.
Large-billed Crow - common.
Common Myna - noisy and unmissable.
Spotted Dove - common.
White-cheeked Barbet - several, noisy.
Asian Koel - two.
Black Drongo - common.
Oriental Magpie-robin - two.
Alexandrine Parakeet - common.
White-breasted Waterhen - one.
Eurasian Golden Oriole - dozens.
Coppersmith Barbet - several.
Chestnut-tailed Starling - one flock.

also lots of little chipmunk/squirrel things.

I did fail to id a few things high in the tree tops - a female sunbird (Purple?) and (most frustrating) a green phylloscopus with pale legs and no obvious wingbars. Tricky without a scope.

Hi Alistair,
Sounds like you had a great few hours in between work, I wish my boss would send me off to some exotic location !, though I did work in Dundee once.
I saw all of these species in my previous two trips to India and your list brought back some great memories, big cheers for that one.
Arent Coppersmith Barbets brilliant ? and that weird call !
I think your chipmunk/squirrels are most likely Five Banded Ground Squirrels, although I'm sure theres a Four Banded also, or something similar anyway.
cheers and thanx.

The Coppersmith Barbet must have been exciting to see !
nice little list you worked out.
