Albinos

I got this picture from a friend who lives in Eastern US. He said this robin lives about a mile from him and has a nest full of hungry babies. I was wondering if anyone else has seen albino birds, or birds that have a dominant white factor?

Very interesting looking bird!

This is actually a leucistic bird, not an albino. Leucism is a condition that means whiter or lighter-than-normal feathers. Albinism is a lack of pigment in the soft tissues, like skin, eyes, etc. You can see this bird has color in the breast, beak and legs and has normal dark eyes.

Both conditions regularly, but not frequently, occur in all bird species. There are several albinistic and leucistic birds in our own Gallery if you'll do a search on those keywords.

Thanx! I'll look them up. I agree, I also don't think this bird is albino, since it does have some color and dark eyes. But it was a new experience for me to see something like that! How are the odds that one of the babies will be leucistic?
