hello to you all
last week my dad witnessed 40ish black swans flying up the river clyde, beyond the erskine bridge, and then heading in a roughly northerly direction. the next day he saw them return.
he was so wow'd (as i was by the second hand account) that it spurred me on to do a bit of research for him. this has shed zero light on the situation. are there any 'pet' swans in great numbers around the west coast of scotland that could explain this? or any other explanations.
any light anyone can shed would be appreciated.
many thanks

Hi flit,
A warm welcome to BirdForum from all the Admin and Moderators.
Black swans do not occur naturally in the wild in Britain. They are very popular in collections and there are a number of escapees. I have certainly never heard of so many being seen at one time. Perhaps one of our members from the area will have an idea.
Hi Robin,
I seem to recall someone saying in a recent thread that they had seen Black Swan with young, and I had heard that there were records of them breeding successfully on odd occasions.
No idea where a flock of 40 might have come from though!!
All the best... Ruby
